Study as an international student
We’re delighted to welcome creatives from all over the world to our creative studios. As a CRICOS registered provider, we host international students from more than 15 countries to study on campus, with intakes in January and July each year.
If you’re joining us from New Zealand, you’re categorised as a domestic student and no visa is required. Can’t travel? Study from home in our virtual studio or self-paced online through our partner Interior Design Online, both with no student visa required.

Do I need an ATAR to study a career course?
No. You don’t need an ATAR or any previous experience to study our career courses, just a genuine passion for interiors.
Can I study a career course online?
Yes. The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration and Diploma of Interior Design can be studied on campus, in a virtual studio in real time, or self-paced online through our partner Interior Design Online. The Certificate IV in Design is exclusively online, and the Advanced Diploma of Interior Design is currently on campus only.
Can I get a VET Student Loan?
Eligible students can apply for a VET Student Loan to help pay for the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Interior Design. In 2026 the eligible loan cap is $19,290.
What's the difference between a career course and a university degree?
Our career courses are nationally accredited vocational (VET) qualifications, so they’re more hands-on and portfolio-focused than a university degree, and get you into the industry faster and more affordably. If you’d like to continue on to further study, Diploma and Advanced Diploma graduates can apply for direct entry into UNSW Sydney’s Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Hons), saving 12 or 18 months.

What's the difference between the Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma? +
The Certificate IV in Interior Decoration is our foundation course and can be completed in 6 months on campus or in a virtual studio. The Diploma of Interior Design goes deeper into residential and commercial design over 12 or 18 months, and the Advanced Diploma of Interior Design lets you specialise further over 21 or 27 months. Your Certificate IV can be credited into the Diploma and Advanced Diploma.
Are these courses accredited?
Yes. Our career courses are nationally accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), and we’re a CRICOS registered provider. Our Diploma courses are also recognised by the Design Institute of Australia.
Is there a pathway to university?
Yes. Sydney Design School has partnered with UNSW Sydney to offer graduates of the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Interior Design the opportunity to apply for direct entry into the Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Hons), saving 12 or 18 months of study.
Do international students need a student visa?
It depends on how you study. A student visa is required to study on campus with us. If you study in our virtual studio or self-paced online through Interior Design Online, no student visa is required.
